Job Title: Behaviour Mentor
Primary Behaviour Mentor | 1:1 Support Roles from September
Location: Bristol & South Gloucestershire
Contract Type: Full-Time or Part-Time| September Start
Pay: Competitive and negotiable, dependent on experience - rising from £14.25/hour
Could you be the person who changes a child's experience of school?
Every September, Axcis Education receives a significant number of requests from primary schools seeking dedicated Behaviour Mentors and SEND Teaching Assistants to support children who are finding the transition into school particularly challenging.
These are often pupils in EYFS and Key Stage 1 who may be presenting with emerging Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, attachment difficulties, emotional regulation challenges, communication needs or behaviours that indicate they require additional support to engage successfully with school life. Many are at the very beginning of their SEND journey and may not yet have an EHCP in place.
We're therefore looking to connect with compassionate, resilient and creative individuals now so that we're ready to match the right people to these rewarding opportunities as they arise throughout September and the first term of the new academic year.
About the Role
As a Behaviour Mentor working in the Primary phase, your role will be about far more than managing behaviour. You'll help children feel safe, understood and successful within the school environment, often becoming one of the key adults in their educational journey.
Working closely with class teachers, SENDCos and school leaders, you'll draw upon your own skills, experience and interests to develop creative approaches that improve engagement, participation and progress. For one child, this might mean incorporating sport, movement breaks or outdoor learning into their day. For another, it could be using art, construction activities, storytelling or shared interests to build trust and connection.
The most successful Behaviour Mentors understand that behaviour is communication. They focus on relationships first, taking a trauma-informed approach that seeks to understand the reasons behind a child's behaviour while helping them develop the skills, confidence and emotional regulation strategies needed to thrive in school.
You'll be supporting pupils on a one-to-one basis, implementing personalised support plans, encouraging positive behaviour, helping children access learning and working collaboratively with wider school staff to celebrate and build upon every success, however small.
About the Schools
The schools we support are inclusive primary settings across South Gloucestershire that are committed to helping every child succeed. Many have strong SEND provisions and are investing heavily in early intervention, recognising the importance of providing the right support before difficulties become entrenched.
These schools are looking for adults who can bring patience, consistency, creativity and genuine care to the role. They value individuals who can form meaningful relationships with pupils while maintaining clear boundaries, high expectations and a positive outlook.
What We're Looking For
We're particularly interested in hearing from candidates who have experience supporting children or young people with SEND, SEMH needs, challenging behaviour, trauma backgrounds, attachment needs or adverse childhood experiences (ACEs).
Experience gained through education, youth work, social care, residential care, sports coaching, mentoring, fostering, youth offending services, mental health support or similar environments would all be highly relevant.
A strong understanding of positive behaviour support, de-escalation techniques and relationship-based practice is highly desirable. Team Teach training, experience of restrictive interventions and knowledge of trauma-informed approaches would also be advantageous.
Most importantly, we're looking for people who can remain calm under pressure, build authentic relationships and see the potential in every child, even on their most challenging days.
An Enhanced DBS on the Update Service, or willingness to obtain one, will be required.
