Job Title: SEND Teaching Assistant
SEND Teaching Assistant Bournemouth, Dorset Job Overview: We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) Teaching Assistant to join our small, vibrant SEND provision in Bournemouth, Dorset. The ideal candidate will have experience and knowledge in supporting children with Speech and Language difficulties and Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), particularly non-verbal students. An understanding or experience in using Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) and Makaton is highly desirable. You'll be working in a primary setting with a focus on delivering personalised educational support to a small group of 6-8 pupils. Collaborating closely with a Higher-Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) and a Primary teacher, you will play a crucial role in facilitating an inclusive and supportive learning environment for our students. Key Responsibilities: - Assist in the planning and delivery of individualised educational activities, under the guidance of the HLTA and Primary Teacher. - Implement effective strategies to support pupils with Speech and Language difficulties and ASC. - Utilise PECS and Makaton to aid communication with non-verbal students and enhance their language development. - Monitor and record students’ progress, reporting back to the HLTA and Primary Teacher, and contributing to review meetings. - Provide emotional support and appropriate pastoral care to students, helping to foster self-esteem and independence. - Prepare learning materials and adapt resources to meet the diverse needs of students. - Work collaboratively with the teaching staff to ensure a cohesive approach to SEND education. - Engage with continuous professional development opportunities to enhance your skills within SEND education. - Ensure the health and safety of pupils at all times, following school policies and procedures. Requirements: - Experience working within a SEND environment, particularly with children who have Speech and Language difficulties and ASC. - Knowledge of PECS and Makaton is desirable, though training will be provided where necessary. - A patient, caring and adaptable approach to working with children with a range of SEND. - Strong communication and teamwork skills. - An understanding of the SEND Code of Practice and current educational frameworks. - Relevant Teaching Assistant qualification or a willingness to undertake training. - Enhanced DBS clearance, or willingness to obtain one.
