Learning Support Assistant – KS1 (Phonics, Speech & Language, ASC Support)

Contract: Full-Time, Term Time Only
Salary: £90 - £95 per day
A welcoming and inclusive primary school in Bournemouth is seeking a skilled and enthusiastic Learning Support Assistant to join them this January, providing full-time 1:1 support for a Key Stage 1 pupil with ASC and speech and language needs.
This role is ideal for an LSA with strong experience in phonics, early literacy, and speech and language interventions, who can help young learners build confidence, communication skills, and independence in the classroom.
The Role
Provide 1:1 support for a KS1 pupil with Autism and speech/language challenges, ensuring they are fully engaged in learning and daily activities.
Deliver targeted phonics support using structured programmes (e.g. Read Write Inc, Little Wandle, or similar).
Implement speech and language strategies as advised by the school’s SENCo and external SALT professionals.
Support the class teacher in adapting lessons to ensure accessibility and success for the pupil.
Lead small-group or individual literacy and communication interventions, including vocabulary building, sound awareness, and early reading skills.
Use visual aids, routines, scaffolding, and communication systems (PECS, Makaton – desirable).
Track pupil progress, maintain accurate records, and provide regular feedback to staff and families.
Contribute to a calm, structured, and nurturing classroom environment that encourages social interaction and independence.
The Ideal Candidate
Experience working in a primary school, ideally within KS1.
Strong understanding of phonics teaching, early literacy development, and communication needs.
Confident in supporting pupils with ASC, speech delays, and language processing needs.
Familiar with communication tools such as PECS, Makaton, visual timetables, and SALT-led strategies.
A nurturing, patient, and proactive approach to supporting young children.
Skilled at adapting tasks, managing transitions, and keeping learners engaged.
A strong communicator who works effectively with teachers, SENCo, SALT professionals, and parents.
