Job Title: Behaviour Teaching Assistant
Behaviour Teaching Assistant – Secondary PRU – Barking and Dagenham
Up to £100 per day | Full-Time | Long-Term | September Start
Axcis are working with a secondary Pupil Referral Unit in Barking and Dagenham who are seeking a resilient and personable Behaviour Teaching Assistant to join their team from September.
The school supports young people with social, emotional and mental health needs, challenging behaviour and disrupted experiences of education. The successful candidate will help pupils re-engage with learning by providing clear boundaries, consistent encouragement and positive adult support.
This role requires someone with a strong presence who can build relationships with pupils while remaining calm and professional when behaviour becomes challenging. The setting is accessible from Dagenham, Barking, Becontree, Chadwell Heath, Rainham and surrounding areas.
About the Behaviour Teaching Assistant Role
Your responsibilities will include:
• Supporting pupils with SEMH and challenging behaviour
• Providing classroom, small-group and 1:1 support
• Helping pupils remain focused and engaged with learning
• Reinforcing clear expectations and consistent routines
• Using positive behaviour-management strategies
• Applying de-escalation techniques when pupils become distressed
• Supporting pupils during transitions and unstructured periods
• Encouraging positive decision-making and emotional regulation
• Building professional relationships with reluctant learners
• Supporting teachers and pastoral staff with behaviour plans
• Recording incidents and pupil progress accurately
• Maintaining high standards of safeguarding
What We’re Looking For
• Experience supporting secondary-aged pupils with challenging behaviour
• Previous experience as a Behaviour Teaching Assistant, SEND TA, Youth Worker or Learning Mentor
• Strong behaviour-management and de-escalation skills
• A confident personality and strong professional presence
• Ability to establish firm but fair boundaries
• A calm, resilient and consistent approach
• Confidence supporting pupils who may initially resist adult direction
• Experience within a PRU, alternative provision or SEMH setting is desirable
• Strong communication and teamwork skills
• Good safeguarding awareness
• Full-time availability from September
• Commitment to a long-term role
