Job Title: SEMH Teaching Assistant
SEMH Teaching Assistant – Primary – Barking & Dagenham
£100–£115 per day | Full-Time | Long-Term | Dagenham
Axcis Education is recruiting a calm, confident and resilient SEMH Teaching Assistant to work within a primary school in Dagenham, supporting children who need additional help with emotional regulation, behaviour and engagement with learning.
This is a full-time, long-term opportunity for someone who understands that challenging behaviour often has an underlying reason. Pupils may struggle with frustration, anxiety, impulsivity, transitions or maintaining focus, and will benefit from an adult who can remain consistent, build trust and help them regulate before supporting them back into learning.
The school is looking for someone who can combine a nurturing approach with strong boundaries — warm enough to build relationships, but confident enough to maintain expectations when situations become difficult.
About the Role
Supporting primary-aged pupils with SEMH and behavioural needs
Providing 1:1, small-group and classroom-based support
Helping pupils recognise triggers and develop strategies for emotional regulation
Supporting children through periods of dysregulation or challenging behaviour
Using positive reinforcement, clear boundaries and predictable routines
Helping pupils re-engage with learning following difficult moments
Supporting English, Maths and wider classroom activities
Following individual EHCP targets and behaviour support strategies
Working closely with the class teacher, SENCO and pastoral team
Encouraging pupils to develop confidence, resilience and independence
About You
We would particularly like to hear from candidates who:
Have previous experience as a SEMH TA, SEND TA, LSA, Behaviour Support Assistant or similar
Have supported children with challenging behaviour or emotional regulation difficulties
Have previous school-based SEND or behaviour experience – strongly preferred
Understand the importance of de-escalation and consistent boundaries
Can remain calm and professional when behaviour becomes challenging
Can build strong relationships without becoming overly familiar
Are patient, resilient and comfortable using initiative
Hold a CACHE Level 2 or Level 3 qualification – desirable but not essential
Can commit to a full-time, long-term position
The School & Location
The role is based within a primary school in Dagenham, with good transport links from Barking, Chadwell Heath, Ilford, Romford and surrounding East London areas. This would be a strong fit for someone who enjoys working with pupils who may need more time, structure and consistency from the adults around them before they are able to fully engage in school.
