Job Title: SEND Teaching Assistant
Teaching Assistant – Full Time
SEND School | Exeter
Start: January
Pay: £90–£95 per day
Are you an experienced Teaching Assistant with a passion for supporting young people who need a nurturing, structured and engaging environment to thrive? Are you looking to join a dedicated school team where every day brings variety, purpose and the chance to make a tangible difference? If so, this could be the ideal next step in your career.
We are seeking a committed, skilled and compassionate SEND Teaching Assistant to join a well-established specialist school in Exeter. The school supports pupils aged 11 to 16, all of whom have Education Health Care Plans and present with a wide range of complex needs and abilities. These include moderate to severe learning difficulties, autism (ASC), speech, language and communication challenges, sensory impairments, and physical disabilities. No two pupils are the same—and that is what makes this role both meaningful and rewarding.
As part of a highly collaborative and knowledgeable team, you will work closely with teachers, therapists and support staff to create a safe, inclusive and stimulating learning environment. Your role will involve providing tailored support to pupils on a 1:1 and small-group basis, helping them access the curriculum, build confidence and develop essential life skills. You will use a range of communication approaches and strategies, adapting your support to individual needs and celebrating every achievement—no matter how small.
We are particularly keen to hear from candidates who already have solid experience in SEND settings or who have worked with young people with additional needs. Strong behaviour-support skills, patience, resilience and an empathetic approach will be key to your success. An understanding of specialist strategies such as visual supports, sensory regulation, Makaton, PECs or differentiated learning would be advantageous, though ongoing training is offered.
In return, you will join a welcoming and forward-thinking school that values its staff as much as its pupils. You can expect ongoing professional development, support from experienced leaders, and the opportunity to play a central role in shaping positive outcomes for young people who rely on stability and encouragement.
