SEND Teaching Assistant – Specialist School
Are you passionate about supporting children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)? Do you have experience in education, care, support work, youth work, psychology, healthcare or working with vulnerable children or adults?
Axcis Education is currently recruiting for a dedicated SEND Teaching Assistant to join a welcoming and supportive specialist school in Exeter. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who wants to develop their experience within a specialist education setting and make a genuine difference to the lives of young people.
You will support pupils with a range of additional needs, including Autism (ASC), ADHD, SEMH, learning difficulties, speech and language needs and communication difficulties. Experience supporting children or young people with SEND is desirable, although relevant experience from care, support work, youth work or healthcare will also be considered.
The Role
As a SEND Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with pupils, teachers and the wider support team to help students access learning and develop their confidence, independence and social skills.
Your responsibilities will include:
• Providing 1:1 and small-group support to pupils with a range of SEND needs.
• Supporting teachers with engaging and accessible classroom activities.
• Helping pupils develop their communication, social and emotional skills.
• Encouraging independence, confidence and positive behaviour.
• Supporting pupils with transitions, routines and activities throughout the school day.
• Helping create a calm, safe and supportive learning environment.
• Building positive and trusting relationships with pupils.
• Working alongside teachers, therapists and other professionals to support individual needs.
• Following safeguarding procedures and promoting pupil wellbeing.
What We’re Looking For
We would love to hear from candidates who have:
• Experience supporting children, young people or vulnerable individuals.
• A genuine interest in working within SEND education.
• Experience in education, care, support work, youth work, psychology, healthcare or similar settings.
• An understanding of or experience with Autism, ADHD, SEMH, communication or additional needs.
• A calm, patient and resilient approach.
• Strong communication and teamwork skills.
• The ability to build positive relationships and maintain clear boundaries.
• A flexible and proactive attitude.
• A genuine passion for helping young people progress and reach their potential.
