Job Title: Learning Mentor- Plymouth
Learning Mentor – Plymouth
An Alternative Provision in Plymouth is seeking a Learning Mentor to support primary and secondary aged pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, trauma-related challenges, high anxiety, and other moderate learning difficulties. This role offers the opportunity to work in a dynamic, supportive environment where pupils are encouraged to rebuild confidence, develop resilience, and achieve their potential.
About the role
As a Learning Mentor, you will work closely with class teachers, therapists, and support staff to support pupils in both structured classroom settings and outreach activities in the community. The post involves providing 1:1 and small group support, assisting with tailored learning and therapeutic activities, promoting positive behaviour, and contributing to a safe, nurturing, and trauma-informed environment.
The role requires someone who is resilient, flexible, and adaptable, with the ability to respond calmly to challenging situations. A full driving licence and access to a vehicle are essential, as the position involves supporting pupils in community-based activities and outreach.
About the school
The school is committed to supporting pupils who have struggled in mainstream settings to rebuild confidence, learn coping strategies, and develop essential social and academic skills. The school follows a trauma-informed approach and focuses on creating a calm, structured environment where pupils feel understood, safe, and supported to succeed.
The ideal candidate will:
• Be patient, empathetic, and encouraging with pupils
• Demonstrate resilience, flexibility, and the ability to adapt to changing situations
• Be a clear communicator and a reliable team player
• Have experience working with pupils with SEMH needs, high anxiety, trauma, or moderate learning difficulties (desirable)
• Hold a full driving licence and have access to a vehicle for community-based support
This role is suitable for local applicants, teaching assistants, support workers, youth workers, or individuals with relevant experience seeking a rewarding role in alternative provision education. Previous experience with trauma-informed approaches or SEMH is highly valued.
What the school can offer
The school can offer a skilled and motivated staff team, and a genuine opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of its pupils. The successful candidate will receive training in a wide range of areas, alongside mentoring from a line manager and leadership team whose door is always open.
