Teaching Assistant for students with complex needs
Position: Teaching Assistant
Location: primary school
Contract Type: full time
Hours: 8.30 am -16.00pm
Axcis are working with a primary school in Tower Hamlets and seeking a compassionate and dedicated Teaching Assistant to support students with complex needs in a classroom setting. The ideal candidate will have experience working with children who have a range of physical, emotional, and learning difficulties, including but not limited to Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), speech and language delays, sensory impairments. The Teaching Assistant will work closely with the class teacher and SEN team to provide tailored support to help these students engage in the curriculum and develop both academically and socially.
Key Responsibilities:
• Provide one-on-one and small group support to students with complex needs, both in and out of the classroom, to help them engage with lesson content.
• Assist students with personal care and daily activities where necessary, including feeding, toileting, and mobility.
• Support students with communication challenges by using alternative communication methods (e.g., PECs, Makaton)
• Foster a positive and inclusive learning environment by encouraging student participation and helping students build self-confidence and independence.
• Implement behaviour management strategies, tailored to individual students, to promote positive behaviour and support emotional regulation.
• Provide emotional support to students who may experience anxiety, frustration, or sensory overload, using techniques to help them remain calm and engaged.
Essential Skills and Qualifications:
• Experience working with students with complex needs or SEN, particularly those with ASD or behavioural challenges.
• Strong understanding of various support strategies and interventions for students with complex needs.
• Ability to remain calm and patient in challenging situations.
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to work well within a team and engage effectively with students, staff, and parents.
• A compassionate and empathetic approach to supporting students.
• Experience with specific communication strategies such as PECs, Makaton
